Edited a new factory tour documentary for Epaulet (previously). Learn how Swedish clogs are made with your host, Adele! And dig those phat beats — I had fun making the background music, via good old Garage Band.

Up for auction are sketches for an unfinished, unpublished Dr. Seuss book about sports from the late sixties.  It’s interesting as some insight into his creative process, and despite the sketchy layouts (some are on hotel stationery) it’s easy to imagine how it would look fully-formed. The page layouts are similar to those completed books we’ve all seen as kids.  There are a couple versions of the same pages, particularly towards the end, where he is evidently deciding where to next take the story.  After cataloging all manner of sports and games, the pages stop. A newly invented sport is called “blumf,” which could either be the most brilliant Dr. Seuss sport ever, or else the sound of Seussian writer’s block: “I could blumf.  Or blumf blumf blumf blumf blumf.”

I’m currently editing a new documentary short, and really enjoying coming up with incidental music bits for it on Garage Band.  For whatever reason, all aversion to preset synth sounds & canned loops goes out the window; all cheese is welcome in the name of getting the mood.  This track, titled “It’s Clog-Making Time!” has been a hit in the early drafts of the video.  Take a listen!

Speaking of films by the aforementioned Guard Dog Jammers, I enjoyed this catchy German ska video animated by Uli Seis, for the band Pangäa.  Particularly enjoy the moments where the characters come apart.  And it’ll be in your head all day!

Ingredients for the best music videos, in my book, include funny stories, flustered authority figures, and sound effects that interrupt the music.  Witness the fitness!

Very happy to be part of Bill Plympton’s Guard Dog Anijam, in progress right now!  70 artists are each tackling a shot from the classic short film, and mine is shot number 3 (still above).  There’s a wide variety of styles, based on the stills that have been emailed around… stop motion, computer animation, and hand-drawn, as well as talent levels — all the way from student to  professional to self-taught. One of my favorites is a shot created in dog food — and there a couple hand-drawn ones that I really like the style of, too.

It’s going to be quite a treat to see — and I’m very curious to see how easy the story will be to follow when the design & media changes every few seconds.   It may be a testament to the power of a good story and layouts that this doesn’t matter.

The “Guard Dog Jammers” have been group-emailing one another with aplomb — (sometimes a little too much aplomb!)  But there’s an enthusiasm for this project that’s really contagious, and some wonderful films mixed in with all our requisite self-promotion.  I’ll be sure to post some favorite videos up here shortly!
