The Comics Journal has a great review of a new edition of B. Kliban’s book “Cat.” Those cats were everywhere in the early 80’s, on shirts, mugs, and beach towels doing cute things like skiing, football and aerobics. Any hobby you can imagine! But the cartoons in the book are completely surreal and off the wall — as the reviewer mentions, much more “a meditation on Kliban’s endless fascination for the frequently alien nature of cats” and riffing on this in endlessly unusual ways.
